Modeling Laboratory Observations on Stream-Aquifer Interaction
نویسنده
چکیده
A head loss concept, new to the stream-aquifer interaction, is introduced for modeling laboratory observations. Using this concept, the equation applicable to fully penetrating streams is modified to account for the head loss at the entrance. The modified model is able to explain and fit the observed laboratory data correctly. Equations are proposed to calculate the hydraulic diffusivity of aquifer and head loss at the entrance from the estimate of diffusivity obtained without considering the head loss. An optimization approach is also proposed to estimate the hydraulic diffusivity of the aquifer and head loss from the observed groundwater heads at different sections. MODELING OF GROUNDWATER FLOW OVER SLOPING BEDS IN RESPONSE TO CONSTANT RECHARGE AND STREAM OF VARYING WATER LEVEL
This paper presents an analytical model characterizing unsteady groundwater flow in an unconfined aquifer resting on a sloping impervious bed. The aquifer is in contact with a constant water level at one end. The other end is connected to a stream whose level is increasing form an initial level to a final level at a known exponentially decaying function of time. Moreover, the aquifer is repleni...
متن کاملA quantitative analysis of hydraulic interaction processes in stream-aquifer systems
The hydraulic relationship between the stream and aquifer can be altered from hydraulic connection to disconnection when the pumping rate exceeds the maximum seepage flux of the streambed. This study proposes to quantitatively analyze the physical processes of stream-aquifer systems from connection to disconnection. A free water table equation is adopted to clarify under what conditions a strea...

Flux-exchange between stream and aquifer is assessed on a 85.9 km stretch of the Danube River in Hungary. Streamflow is modeled with a spatially and temporally discretized version of the linear kinematic wave equation written in a state-space form which allows for an easy inversion of flow routing. By knowing inand outflow of the reach, lateral flux exchange between stream and groundwater can b...

The Tamarack State Wildlife Area in eastern Colorado is being investigated as a possible managed recharge project to redirect flows in the South Platte River for water quantity management. Two primary surface water/groundwater interactions exist at Tamarack: (1) between the South Platte River and alluvial aquifer and (2) between backwater sloughs, or secondary river channels, and the alluvial a...
متن کاملEffects of Streambed Conductance on Stream Depletion
Stream depletion, which is the reduction in flow rate of a stream or river due to the extraction of groundwater in a hydraulically connected stream-aquifer system, is often estimated using numerical models. The accuracy of these models depends on the appropriate parameterization of aquifer and streambed hydraulic properties. Streambed conductance is a parameter that relates the head difference ...
